Chris Pine, who can currently be seen as Captain James T. Kirk in J.J. Abrams’ summer blockbuster Star Trek, is in talk to join Denzel Washington in Fox’s action drama Unstoppable. Tony Scott is directing, making the project the fourth collaboration for the director and Washington (The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, Man on Fire, Déjà vu).

The story, which is loosely inspired by real events, centers on an experienced train engineer (Washington) about to be laid off as part of company cutbacks and the newbie conductor hired to replace him. Pine would play the newbie.

They find themselves in a race against time to stop an unmanned, half-mile-long freight train carrying enough combustible liquids and poisonous gas to wipe out a nearby city. Mark Bomback (Race to Witch Mountain, Live Free or Die Hard) wrote the script.

Before Trek Pine had roles The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, Just My Luck, Joe Carnahan’s Smokin’ Aces and the indie dramedy Bottle Shock.

Production will begin in August for summer 2010 release.
